Information on Spanish Language and Literature Instruction

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

You should find answers to most of these questions below or at the various links on this site. For further information contact the Undergraduate Office of the Department of Literature located at Literature Bldg. 110 [858/534-3210], the Spanish lower-division Faculty Supervisor Beatrice Pita. You can also get information from your UCSD College Academic Advising Office.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF SPANISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE INSTRUCTION AT UCSD

Linguistics Language Program

First year (beginning) Spanish at UCSD is taught through the Linguistics Language Program (LLP) located on the third floor of APM [Muir campus].
The Linguistics Language Lab is also located on the third floor of APM.
Beginning Spanish courses offered are: 1A(X); 1B(X); 1C(X) and1D(X)
The LLP also offers Spanish 15/16/17 and Independent Study Spanish Courses.
You can take an on-line placement test that will help determine what class you should take.

Spanish Language in the Department of Literature

Second-year intermediate and more advanced Spanish language and culture courses --as well as classes in Peninsular, Latin American and Chican@/Latin@ literature-- are offered through UCSD's Department of Literature

the intermediate and advanced language courses offered are: 2A; 2B; 2C; 50A; 50B; 50C (that is, the second and third year Spanish sequences)
Native/Heritage speakers who want to polish their skills can enroll in 2D or 2E
the Conversation/discussion Workshop series include Spanish 21/31/41
courses numbered 100 and above are upper-division classes

PLACEMENT TESTS:

BEGINNNING SPANISH STUDENTS. You can start by taking an on-line placement test offered through the LLP that will tell you if you should start in the beginning Spanish program. Click here for information on the LLP Placement Test

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL STUDENTS. Students who have studied Spanish elsewhere, are Bilingual/Native Speakers or took the AP Exams in High School should check their transcripts or talk to their College Academic Advisors to know what class to take, or should contact bpita@ucsd.edu regarding placement in the appropriate intermediate level Spanish class,

HERITAGE/NATIVE SPEAKERS OF SPANISH

Bilingual/Heritage speaker students who learned Spanish at home and/or while living abroad, or took the AP Spanish tests, should contact the Faculty Supervisor bpita@ucsd.edu regarding placement in the appropriate class, most likely LTSP 2D and 2E, before moving to more advanced coursework.

If you took the AP exams in high school, see the chart below for how the AP scores correlate with placement in the Intermediate Spanish Program. If you have questions or encounter problems enrolling online, contact bpita@ucsd.edu

you are exempt from Ling/SP 1CX
you should enroll in Ling/SP 1DX or LT/SP 2A

Planning ahead for Study Abroad in Spanish-speaking countries

Participation in Study Abroad Programs

Students planning to study abroad should plan ahead early in their UCSD career. Many study abroad programs require students to have completed at least two years --the Spanish 2C, 2D/E or 50ABC level-- of college level Spanish before studying abroad.

LANGUAGE SUPPORT SERVICES:
The OASIS Language Program provides assistance to students doing work in Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Russian, and other languages. The Academic Writing in Spanish class, brainstorm sessions for Lit/Spanish students, the Spanish grammar hotline Weekly workshops in Spanish, French, and English as a Second Language, pronunciation labs, and one-to-one conferences for feedback on written drafts.
